In life we are continually going from feeling really stable and grounded to the other extreme of feeling shaky and insecure. It’s common for woman in their monthly cycles to experience this range of emotions every 28 days, from feelings of power and assertiveness when we ovulate to then retreating and nurturing ourselves as we menstruate. This happens too in illness and in health. When you feel ill you feel vulnerable and withdraw from the world to recover but in health it’s quite the opposite.
There are times too that we consciously choose to make ourselves vulnerable. Starting a new career or starting a family for example. We take risks, which are necessary part of our growth in life. The first risk we took as babies was learning to walk and we would never have learnt that skill if we were not willing to fall down again and again. We kept trying without worrying about who was judging you or who was better than you.
Reclaiming that spirit of adventure and the childlike willingness to fall over is something we can cultivate in our adult lives. Taking risks, whether they be in business, in love, or in sport, is part of being fully alive. But equally as important is knowing when to come back to center, to pull inward and ground ourselves.
So when you feel insecure and shaky practice asanas that are really stable, safe and strong such as mountain, warrior and lunges, but also take some risks by intentionally choosing postures where we might experience instability and vulnerability, such as balances.
